The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged the Senate to formally declare the vacancy in the Anambra South Senatorial District, paving the way for a bye-election. This call was made by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during a consultative meeting with the media in Abuja.
According to Professor Yakubu, INEC is yet to receive official notification of the vacancy, despite being aware of the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South in the Senate. The commission is ready to conduct a bye-election within 30 days of receiving the formal declaration of vacancy from the Senate.
The INEC Chairman also emphasized the importance of responsible media coverage of party primaries to prevent issues like delegate buying. The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists pledged the union’s support for INEC’s mandates.
