The Anambra State government has launched a demolition exercise targeting illegal structures and shanties in Onitsha. The operation, led by the Chairman of the Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ANSPPB), Barrister Chike Maduekwe, is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enforce compliance with building regulations across the state.

Barrister Maduekwe emphasized the potential risks posed by unauthorized constructions, stating that they threaten the safety and security of the community. The specific areas impacted included shanties near public buildings in Nkisi and an illegal construction on a canal in the Omogba area of Onitsha.

The demolition initiative follows a three-month grace period during which developers were required to present proof of building approvals.
