The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Anikpe Valentine Chibuike, in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a 35-year-old single mother, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area.The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect was arrested by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, on January 7, 2026, following investigations into the incident which occurred on the midnight of December 9, 2025.According to the police, the suspect confessed during interrogation that he stabbed the victim in the neck with a knife, leading to her death. Ikenga dismissed reports that the killing was linked to people the suspect owed money, describing such claims as false and misleading.He explained that preliminary findings showed the crime was allegedly committed over suspicion of infidelity, adding that the suspect had become emotionally distressed after going bankrupt while trying to establish a business for the victim.The police spokesperson further disclosed that the suspect admitted to dropping a fake letter claiming he had been kidnapped by creditors in an attempt to mislead investigators and escape from the crime scene.Ikenga said detectives have visited the mortuary where the deceased’s body was deposited as part of ongoing investigations, noting that the case has generated public outrage and renewed concern over domestic and relationship-related violence.He urged members of the public to seek peaceful and lawful ways of resolving disputes and to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent avoidable tragedies, adding that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
