In a bid to alleviate the impact of perennial flood disasters, Justice Development and Peace Caritas (JDPC) Onitsha has distributed farm inputs worth millions of naira to farmers in 12 communities of Ogbaru Local Government Area.
The distribution, which took place under the Flood Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Project in Nigeria, saw 50 farmers from each of the benefitting communities receive cassava stems and yam tubers. The project is implemented by JDPC and funded by Catholic Relief Services.
Reverend Father Edwin Udoye, Executive Director of JDPC Onitsha, explained that the project aims to build the capacity of local communities to contain flood disasters and reduce associated risks. He noted that potato stems will also be procured for distribution at the onset of the rainy season.
According to Father Udoye, the project will also provide non-food items and unconditional cash transfers to support the livelihoods of the farmers. Town hall meetings will be held to raise awareness about the project and its objectives.
