The Anambra State Government has announced plans to develop rice irrigation projects in three communities: Umumbo, Ogbakuba, and Ndikelionwu in Ayamelum, Ogbaru, and Orumba North local government areas, respectively. This initiative aims to enhance food security in the state.
According to the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Forster Ihejiofor, the government will utilize a 100-hectare land in Umumbo community for rice production, leveraging the completed pumping station of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Programme (ATAPS). The project is expected to commence next month.
In collaboration with the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), the state government will also develop a large expanse of land in Urum Community and other areas served by the irrigation facility. The government intends to use the land as a demonstration center for farmers to adopt modern techniques for enhanced rice productivity.
The Traditional Ruler of Umumbo Community, HRH Igwe Simon Chidubem, has pledged the community’s support for the project, emphasizing the need for transparency. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Uzoka, commended the traditional ruler for his commitment to advancing agriculture in the state.
The project is part of the state government’s efforts to boost food production and reduce dependence on imported rice. With the support of NALDA and the community, the Anambra State Government is optimistic about the success of the rice irrigation projects.
