The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has called for stronger collaboration with traditional rulers in Anambra State in its ongoing efforts to combat criminal activities and ensure community safety.
Anambra State NSCDC Commandant, Maku Olatunde, made this appeal during a familiarization visit to the palace of His Majesty, Pharm. Alex Uzo Onyido, the traditional ruler of Ogidi Kingdom in Idemili North Local Government Area, on Thursday, April 3, 2025.
In a statement issued by SC Okadigbo Edwin, Head of Media and Tactical Unit of the NSCDC Anambra Command, Commandant Maku highlighted the strategic role of traditional rulers in fostering grassroots security.
“Traditional rulers play a vital role in maintaining security within their communities. As custodians of indigenous customs and culture, they are uniquely positioned to provide purposeful leadership in security management,” Maku stated.
He expressed appreciation on behalf of the Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for the initiative of constructing a Tactical Outpost for the Civil Defence Corps in Ogidi, aimed at enhancing peace and security in the area and its environs.
Maku reiterated the Corps’ readiness to collaborate with community leaders, stressing that the NSCDC—mandated to protect critical assets at all levels of government—relies on community support to fulfill its duties effectively. He urged traditional rulers to encourage their subjects to share vital information to help prevent crime and safeguard lives and property.
In response, Igwe Alex Onyido welcomed the NSCDC team and commended their efforts in Anambra State. He pledged the full support of the Ogidi traditional council and assured that the Tactical Outpost project would be prioritized.
“We will expedite the construction process and ensure that the facility is ready within six months for handover to the NSCDC,” Igwe Onyido affirmed.
The visit underscores the NSCDC’s commitment to community-based security strategies and its recognition of traditional institutions as key partners in achieving sustainable peace across the state.
