Onitsha is set for a major transformation in its transportation infrastructure as construction progresses on the Omambala Line Inter-State Bus Terminal at Bridge Head, with stakeholders describing the project as a significant intervention that could improve traffic management and reshape the commercial gateway into Anambra State.The terminal, being championed by the Managing Director of Omambala Line Limited, Chief Chukwuemeka Ofozoba, is located on a 15-plot site near Hero Junction, Bridge Head.The project is designed to provide a structured and modern transportation facility while addressing some of the challenges associated with indiscriminate roadside loading, traffic congestion, environmental disorder and inadequate passenger facilities around the Bridge Head axis.According to Ofozoba, the terminal is expected to accommodate about 300 vehicles at a time entering Onitsha from the Asaba axis. The facility will have dedicated sections for different categories of vehicles, a large cargo bay, spacious parking areas and passenger waiting lounges.
The terminal is also designed with three gates comprising one entrance and two exit points to facilitate the smooth movement of vehicles and reduce congestion within and around the facility.Other features of the project include solar-powered lighting, security posts, modern toilet facilities, drainage infrastructure and a grand entrance gate.Bridge Head remains one of the major entry points into Anambra State and receives thousands of commuters, traders and motorists daily. The establishment of a properly structured bus terminal in the area is therefore expected to help improve traffic organisation and reduce the number of commercial vehicles loading and dropping passengers indiscriminately along major roads.The project could also contribute to improving the appearance and environmental condition of the Bridge Head area, which serves as an important gateway to Onitsha, one of the state’s major commercial centres.Beyond transportation, the terminal is expected to generate economic opportunities and provide a more organised environment for commercial activities.
A structured transport facility could also provide government with a more efficient platform for revenue collection, monitoring and regulation.Transport stakeholders have noted that effective management of the terminal will be important to achieving its intended objectives. They believe that providing modern infrastructure, while ensuring proper enforcement of traffic and operational regulations, could significantly improve the movement of people and goods within the area.The project also demonstrates the potential for private investment to complement government efforts in addressing urban infrastructure and transportation challenges.For a commercial city such as Onitsha, where transportation plays a major role in the movement of people, goods and services, improved transport infrastructure could have a wider impact on commerce and economic activity.Community leaders and residents have welcomed the development, describing the terminal as a potentially important addition to the Bridge Head area and expressing hope that the project will be completed and effectively managed.If successfully completed and properly operated, the Omambala Line Inter-State Bus Terminal could provide a more organised transportation environment, improve commuter experience and contribute to efforts to reduce congestion around one of Anambra’s busiest entry points.For Onitsha and Anambra State, the project represents another step towards creating a more organised, efficient and modern transportation system.
